Short answer

San Diego pedicab drivers must agree on the price with you before the ride, offer an itemized receipt and display their fares and license. Amplified music is banned: the City Council voted 8–0 in October 2024 to prohibit amplified sound equipment on pedicabs, and the Port of San Diego bans it on the bayfront.

Do I have to agree on the price before a pedicab ride in San Diego?

Yes. City rules approved in October 2024 require pedicab operators to agree on the price with you before the ride and to offer an itemized receipt. On Port of San Diego tidelands, the full fare must be agreed before departure and drivers must give you a written, agreed pre-trip price.

Do pedicabs have to display their fares?

Yes. The 2024 city amendments call for fares and pedicab licenses to be prominently displayed, and on Port tidelands pedicab rates must be displayed both inside and outside every pedicab.

Can pedicabs play music in San Diego?

Not amplified music. In October 2024 the San Diego City Council voted 8–0 to ban amplified sound equipment on pedicabs, and the Port of San Diego prohibits amplified sound and music from pedicabs on its tidelands. An earlier city rule already barred noise audible from more than 50 feet away.

Where can pedicabs ride along the bayfront?

On Port tidelands, pedicabs use designated motorized and pedal-only routes along the Embarcadero on North Harbor Drive, from the Coast Guard station to the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. Motorized pedicabs must stay on roadways, bike lanes and streets, while pedal-only pedicabs may use certain designated mixed-use sidewalks and paths.

How can I tell a pedicab is allowed on Port property?

Every pedicab operating on Port property needs a Pedicab Operating Agreement with the Port and must show Port-issued placards on the back and each side. The placards carry a phone number, email, website and QR code for reporting possible violations.

What do these rules mean for advertisers?

Plan creative that works without sound, since amplified music is banned, and leave room for the required fare, license and Port placards. Ask any operator to confirm its city permit and, for bayfront routes, its Port Pedicab Operating Agreement before you book.
